Repost: Newmarket Kings Theatre Facebook Page

Saturday 7th June for one night only…

Newmarket Kings Theatre is delighted to announce our first comedy gig of 2014, featuring our very own Eric Lampaert!  http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/date/106787

eric_nomads

Eric, who grew up in Newmarket and was a regular on the Kings Theatre stage in his younger days, will be performing his latest stand-up comedy in readiness for his show at the Edinburgh Festival.

The show also features two of Eric’s hilarious comedy pals, Rhys James & Dan Schreiber.

NKT is truly fortunate to be hosting such hilarious acts. This is not a night to be missed, so book now to ensure you don’t miss out!

On Eric:
“★★★★ He makes it look so easy. This is a man with very funny bones” – DAILY EXPRESS
“★★★★ Likeable and enjoying, sweeping up the audience in the sheer energy of his performance. The strength of his scatty character rips through the room like a mini-hurricane” – CHORTLE
“★★★★ Superb banter that was clearly improvised. The sign of a good comedian” – THREE WEEKS
“★★★★ Delightfully Weird” – TIME OUT

On Dan:
“…he’s smart on stage, too, with a penchant for quirky true stories, such as the feeble attempts to explain away Kung Fu star David Carradine’s death by auto-erotic asphyxiation… he has funny bones, and an engagingly upbeat delivery in which to package his borderline nerdy concerns” – CHORTLE

On Rhys:
“Sickeningly talented young stand-up. He’s a super-sharp writer, with a ton of smart, intricately-written jokes and stories where you’re never more than a few seconds away from another punchline.” – Time Out
“His hit rate is prodigiously high … A bright future in comedy surely awaits”- FEST

270 mile bike ride in just 27 hours – Help For Heroes inspires 4 ‘weekend’ cyclists.

Four keen ‘weekend’ cyclists  from Newmarket are taking on the challenge to push themselves beyond their limits to achieve a goal on behalf of Help for Heroes.

The popular Help For Heroes, 100 mile Dawn Raid takes place from Tedworth House to London on Sunday 8th June but the Newmarket team decided to extend this ride even further. Leaving the centre of Newmarket in Suffolk they will head South West to cycle to Tedworth House recovery centre in Tidworth, Wiltshire where they will spend a few hours with some of our soldiers before the official ride starts in the early hours of Sunday morning. The unsupported ride on the Saturday will see them cover circa 170 miles. The total riding experience is a grand total of 270 miles in just 27 hours.

The team, (Lto R) David Buist, Jake Woolf, Gareth Godfrey, Owen Wilson, have currently raised £3,922.46 for Help For Heroes.

Gareth Godfrey, Director of Godfrey and Hicks Builders says:

“We are sure that you will agree that 270 miles in a little over 24hours with no sleep is a small sacrifice to make on behalf of such a fantastic charity that supports some of the strongest and most determined people we have had the opportunity to meet. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.

All of this means that we are able to support wounded, sick and injured servicemen, women and veterans with the support they need and deserve.”

Star at Lidgate – Restaurant review

I love stumbling over an absolute gem… somewhere slightly off the beaten track with a welcoming feel and incredible grub. 20140410-165802.jpg I recently visited Star at Lidgate and was so pleased to find that it was much more than “just” a village pub. I’ve heard many a murmur about Star at Lidgate and so have been keen to review the place for a while. My best friend (and vegetarian) Lucinda and I headed over for a mid-week treat! I know many of you spotted the comedian at the weekend but we found out that after visiting the lovely ladies at Bren Pauls, Jack Whitehall and Radio 1 pal, Greg James took the mere 6 mile journey from Newmarket high street to eat at the Star before their guest appearance at Deniro’s! If you are a “larger group” heading to Star at Lidgate then you can enjoy a FREE TAXI there and back! The warmth in temperature from the gorgeous, open, stacked fire is matched by the welcome you receive from Steve Cook. His attentive and friendly nature is consistent throughout your entire dining experience. With a “veggie” in tow, we started with olives, bread and a spanish omelette. The bread, clearly made on the day, was light and incredibly flavoursome! The vegetarian dish, which consisted of mushrooms and chestnuts, was a bourguignon that complimented its own flavours so well Lucinda confidently stated that it was “the best vegetarian meal” she had eaten in the area! Not only were the flavours of my chorizo and sun-dried tomato chicken dish wonderful the textures were unbelievable too! The chicken breast itself was far from dry and mixed really well with the juices and oil from the rich chorizo! The fine layer of skin on the breast was perfectly crispy and a really tasty combination with the rest of the softer meats. (I speak from experience when I recommend their famous paella dish too!) Feeling satisfied and full we opted for a desert to share and were so pleased we did when the huge, homemade toffee pudding arrived on our table with two spoons and a generous “dollop” of vanilla ice cream. This melt-in-your-mouth treat was the perfect end to the perfect evening. Main courses are priced between £12 and £17 with tapas options costing approx £4.75-£4.85 each. Considering that our visit was early on a Wednesday evening, I expected the ambience to be verging on uncomfortably quiet. We were wrong! The atmosphere was great! Now, and on reflection, it does not surprise me that a handful of locals sat at the bar and that we were 1 of 4 lively tables dining that evening. Check out the “What’s on Guide” for events taking place at Star at Lidgate this month. Will we see you at the live music session this Sunday? In the heart of an area with so many pleasant dining options, Star at Lidgate beautifully positions itself as an inviting and indulgent village pub that you will want to return to again and again. http://www.lidgatestar.co.uk 01638 500275 20140410-165809.jpg

TT Nails, Newmarket

East Anglia’s fastest manicure man – Andy Tran!

After Andy’s extensive nail and manicure training, he worked in busy London nail bars. Working on the finger tips of business women with money but no time – speed and accuracy was crucial!
20140325-170505.jpg

Now Andy runs TT Nails in Newmarket. I love popping in to the salon to get my nails fixed, extended or designed by Andy. Despite the team, that consists of Andy and his wife, being rushed of their feet you will always be welcomed with a smile! What’s more, your extensions/infills and Gellish colour on top will take no more than 30minutes!

An acrylic full set costs £28.00 (£35.00 with Gellish on top!)

I have always been so pleased with Andy’s creations. Last week I decided to bravely jump into spring with this gorgeous pastel Easter shade of green!

Three Blackbirds, Woodditton

Using vouchers in restaurants and pubs can be an embarrassing experience. An ideal venue will subtly acknowledge your voucher, take it to the till and return quietly with any queries.

If you turn up to a chain restaurant without an available discount code then “more fool you!” Why pay more than the table next to you for exactly the same meal and service. This is similar to Groupon vouchers, if other diners are in the same restaurant, enjoying the same menu but paying less then you should be embarrassed for not being “money-smart” not for holding an A4 voucher.

Recently, we dined at the Three Blackbirds, Woodditton. With it being the “eve” of my birthday and having tweeted the pub about my trip on numerous occasions I was really quite excited!

Image

I want to bypass the meal to tell you about the voucher code horror but credit where it’s due, the food was tasty.

My paté starter was huge and had a gorgeous texture and flavour. I then had the fish and chips. Big portions and tasty but it wasn’t exceptionally better than dishes at other pubs in the area. I do wonder if pubs should reduce prices during the week as you are certainly not paying for the buzzing atmosphere. The fish and chips were a very reasonable price, costing under £11.00. Excluding vegetarian dishes (and the steak options) the average main course works out at £15.03. A price that I think is suitable for a Friday – Sunday meal and evenings entertainment.

Image

Despite purchasing the three course Groupon voucher we were too full to opt for a dessert so simply had one of their rich and delicious coffee’s instead.

Time for the bill…

It turns out that when on the Groupon mobile app you have to scroll to the very bottom of the page, past the fine print and even under the map (!) to see that it says the voucher will only be valid if you mention it when booking.

There were just three tables occupied on the Tuesday evening that we visited. “Emailer” and I presume bar manager, Joe told us that this was the protocol due to availability on the night. The cynic in me can’t help but wonder if that means you are given a separate menu or smaller portions… but I am sure that’s not the case.

Rather than honouring the voucher as the iPhone app did not make the clause clear AND it was my Birthday (!) Joe continued the rather humiliating charade by going upstairs for 5 minutes to print out the web version which did clearly state this comment! Thankfully the pub was now empty so this was all only witnessed by my partner. Poor Gareth never has been “one” for voucher codes so was practically under the table whilst thrusting his credit card in the air just wanting to pay and leave!

I feel it is unfair to somewhat negatively review a venue without contacting the team after the event. Joe has since said that he will contact Groupon to make sure the mobile app version is clearer and that I can have a glass of “bubbly” on my return. I appreciate that this was partly my fault due to my misreading of the bizarre mobile app layout but I really think that on this occasion, any complaints from the pub could have been directed to Groupon rather than affecting us.

Where does this leave me? Well I do still have a valid Groupon voucher, the food is tasty and the 17th century pub itself is gorgeous. With this in mind, when I have stopped blushing I will return as I would quite like to try more options on the menu.

Don’t worry though, I will remember to tell them about my Groupon voucher before hand!

Cottos, Cambridge

With a plethora of family-run, chain and bistro style restaurants, it is not hard to find somewhere to dine near Cambridge but if you want an eatery that can proudly boast wonderful ‘ locally sourced food” in a friendly and intimate location then you may have to dig a little deeper.

Haven’t got time to do that? Just read on…

Cotto’s, Cambridge with Master chef Hans Scweitzer.

“Our traditional handcrafted way using natural ingredients.”

A hidden gem situated on East road, Cambridge. I highly recommend Cottos for its locally sourced and perfectly seasonal dishes!

The staff are polite and happy to supply a steady, constant flow of their homemade selection of buttery and delicious bread once you have enjoyed your bubbles and intricate canapes.

cotto2

Cottos is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. 3 courses costs £50 with an extra £5 charge on a Saturday evening.cotto

Each member of our party thoroughly enjoyed their dish. The scallops in particular were delicious! Why not stretch your courses even further. Hans expertise in chocolate means that the chocolate desert dish is one not to miss. It’s certainly big enough to share between two and means that you can also order the plentiful and proudly British selection of cheeses! Mmm, Wobbly Bottom!

Kings Restaurant, Newmarket – Who can they accommodate?

Knowing full well that Kings Restaurant, Newmarket can provide a romantic meal for two with ease and grace, I invited two friends from Cambridge, my brother and his girlfriend to join my boyfriend and I for a meal.

Will a table for 6 still receive the same charming attitude from staff, efficient service and of course, most importantly, incredible food?

YES! The atmosphere was great on Friday evening. A bustling kitchen could be seen through the viewing window, aromas of rich food could be smelt and every diner in the room seemed to be on good form and enjoying their evening.

We knew at least one person on each of the occupied tables in the restaurant but that is bound to happen when you consider the amount of people we know in Newmarket and the small quantity of wonderful restaurants to dine in.

20140224-134310.jpg

Our table came to the decision that we highly recommend the following:

Starter- Pan Fried Pigeon Breast
Main- Dingley Dell 7hr slow cooked belly of pork
Dessert-Rhubarb and Custard dish (accompany this with a shot of warming Chambord – delicious.)

20140226-191958.jpg

In conclusion, whether you are looking to have a romantic meal for 2, catch up with a select few friends or have a large group get together Kings Restaurant, Newmarket should be an ideal location for outstanding food, service and atmosphere!

What was your favourite Kings Dish?

Bren Pauls Beauty – Wax, chat, and always go back!

Newmarket’s gorgeous beauty salon (and my favourite waxers), Bren Pauls have launched their website.

http://www.brenpaulsbeauty.co.uk/

Offering a full range of waxes for both men and women, I regularly pop along for waxing and to have a catch up with the lovely Michelle and Sasha.

The interior decor is glam but has a feel that welcomes both sexes.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing pamper session or a less-painful-than-you-might-think waxing session make the effort to book in to  Bren Pauls, Newmarket!

Each time I have my eyebrows “done” I am surprised by how much my facial shape changes! When will I learn that this is a treatment that I need to regularly keep up with. I have never fallen into the trap of waxing or shaving (!) my eyebrows into a skinny slug like shape on my face but the flip side of this is that perhaps I have had years of bushy brows!

During one trip to Bren Paul’s, Michelle gave me “HD Brows.” -What a phenomena!

Before the treatment, Michelle explained that  HD Brows is actually a  treatment, developed to leave with you the best brows for your face.
1526819_10202128026074801_417703135_n Results of my HD Brow experience!
The steps experienced are as follows –

1) Consultation – Michelle will chat to you to determine which brow shape will best suit your face and what colour your brows should be.

2) Tinting –Unlike me,  if you have over-plucked brows, Michelle will will tint your brows to match your natural colour. As it was my first HD treatment Michelle gave me a light greyish black colour. My brows are naturally quite dark so next time I am ready to go a little darker to achieve an even more striking effect! The dye is left on for a matter of minutes and then simply wiped off gently.

3) Waxing – Ankles are a no-go area for waxing for me but I find eyebrow waxing pain free. Both Michelle and Sasha are so quick and skilled that by the time i’ve started to recall my latest “interesting” story I want to share with them, they are finished! Michelle will then wax your brows to create the perfect arch for your face shape.

4) Trimming –Michelle then gently combs and trims your brow to ensure that each single hair perfectly sits in place.

5) Tweezing – My least favourite part of any waxing experience but lucky for Bren Pauls clients it is always a quick step of any treatment.

This is my favourite treatment to have done! HD Brows completely changes my look and has honestly lasted around 2 and a half months before (now) it is ready to be done again. It is great value for money and something I highly recommend.

Michelle or Sasha can be contacted on 01638 664441
